Support “Abby and Norma” on Patreon

The Patreon account is now live! If you have input for me about what you see here, feel free to comment here, or email me at humanalien at gmail dot com.

You’re all great fans, and I appreciate that you like “Abby and Norma,” but as I’m sure you all realize, it’s not as great a comic as it could be.

See, I work full time in retail to support myself and my husband John, who’s a full-time student. I also have side jobs, like public speaking, writing books, making jewelry, and drawing on commission… yes, I CAN draw, I just don’t have time to do it every week for the comic.

I get paid for those things. I put less work into “Abby and Norma,” by necessity, because it doesn’t pay.

But that could change. If I got some support through Patreon, I could justify devoting more effort to this weird little comic.

I could spend less time on stuff I do to make money, and more time on “Abby and Norma.” I could buy things to help make the strip better, like digital drawing programs and maybe even a new computer someday.

I could increase the number of strips per week.

I could post more actual hand-drawn artwork.

I could put more time into the characters, making some of the simpler ones more complex and realistic instead of the two-dimensional straw men they often seem to be, and perhaps adding more characters and a wider range of diversity.

I could design better T-shirts, print collections and other merchandise.

I might even be able to travel to a comic con outside my home state, once in a while.

So, if that interests you, please go to Patreon.com and support me and “Abby and Norma”!

Goals

If pledges reach $50.00 a month, I’ll be able to buy Astropad, a program that lets me use an iPad as a drawing tablet connected to my computer. It should make it easier for me to draw original art for strips instead of copying and pasting everything. If this goal is met, I’ll draw at least one comic from scratch every month.

If pledges reach $70.00 a month, I’ll be able to buy an Adonit stylus, which will be lots easier to use than the rubber-ball-on-a-stick stylus I have for my iPad, and will most likely result in better art. If this goal is met, I’ll draw at least two comics from scratch every month.

If pledges reach $100.00 a month, I can afford to work one less day every month, giving me more time for comics. If this goal is met, I’ll post three strips a week instead of two!

If pledges reach $200.00 a month, I will revamp the merchandise page, partnering with some actual graphic design experts to make T-shirts, bags and other goodies that actually look cool!

If pledges reach $300.00 and stay there for a few months, I’ll be able to attend CAKE, the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo. I will actually be able to have a table there, so I can sell stuff and sign stuff and everything!

If pledges reach $500.00 and stay there for a few months, I’ll be able to attend one of the major comic cons. It might be Toronto Comic Con, it might be Emerald City Comic Con, it might be San Diego Comic Con. I’ll decide based on feedback from you. I won’t be able to afford a table there, but I’ll be able to go, so you might get a chance to meet me, and I’ll gladly sign books if you want. Maybe if the pledges stay at this level long enough, I can afford a table someday!

If pledges reach $1000.00 a month, I can basically afford to devote as much time to the comic as I want. 5 strips a week, hand-drawn from scratch, the whole enchilada. Yay!

I’m not familiar with Patreon. Will there be an option for one-time donations rather than monthly? Does one have to commit to a certain number of months?

There’s no requirement to commit to a certain number of months. You can cancel at any time, very easily. It’s not designed for one-time donations, but you can technically make a one-time donation by signing up and then canceling your subscription after the first deduction is made.

      Their FAQ is here: https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/200359925-Patrons

I’m not sure that my audience is one that will respond to a Patreon campaign, but I figured it might be worth a try.
