TEXT OF COMIC:

Abby, what is that noise?? It sounds like you’re hitting something with a hammer.
You’re in a dorm! You can’t do carpentry at all– let alone at this early hour!

-.. .- -. --. . .-.
Is… Is that Morse code?

Rrrgh, okay, if that’s how you want to do it. Let me get on that decoding website.
.-- .- .-. -. .. -. --.

“Danger”? “Warning”? What? Abby, are you okay?

Technical point, you can’t “tap out” morse code with a hammer (or drumstick or whatever), because you need two different lengths of tone. Spacing out the taps to make a dash doesn’t work, because spacing is used to indicate where one letter ends and the next begins.

So SOS is dot-dot-dot, pause, dash-dash dash, pause, dot-dot-dot. But if you try to tap it, you get
dot-dot-dot, pause, dot, pause, dot, pause, dot, pause, dot-dot-dot, which translates as SEES.

What Abby needs is a “tap code”, such as prisoners use.

I could not translate the text version because it’s different from the comics. Like you have — for “—“, and “–” can be one dash or two dashes. But thanks, now I added the single quote in my translator.

And well, she could hit hard wood to make a dot and hit something that vibrate more (ie: steel) for the dash, but that would be annoying…

Good point! She’s probably hitting two different kinds of material. But yeah, annoying.

And as for the dashes… Wow, trying to reformat that was quite the adventure. I tried changing the dashes to the html code for a dash, but then it still autoformatted every three dots into a freaking ellipsis, and finally I just had to treat the Morse code as if it were HTML, and use the tag that makes HTML visible.

I love WordPress, but it is so inflexible when it comes to autoformatting.
